Sew cool

I am tired. I feel like the weekend was a busy whirlwind, when really it was normal and slow as always. Except for two things.

First, I took my sewing 101 class! Woo hoo. It was a small class, only 5 women and the instructor, in the basement of my favorite hipster craft store. I found myself drooling over the beautiful yarns while waiting for the class to start but had to remind myself I was there to learn how to sew! So instead I started drooling over the oh-so-cute Oliver + S children's clothing patterns and very cool Japanese fabrics. It turns out I remember quite a bit from my beginning sewing days decades ago. I was the only person in the class who had ever sewn before so I had quite the leg up as we played around with various stitches and then sewed our little coin purses. Even though I remembered much of my early sewing knowledge, it wasn't until the instructor said, "now don't forget to such-and-such" that I'd think, Oh right...I knew that! Taking the refresher class probably wasn't necessary, but it was a good idea. After the class I went to the fabric store with Evelyn and picked up a some linen fabric to make a very basic window covering for my bedroom. I was able to whip up a square curtain later that evening. Much better than the cardboard box and garment bag that was covering the window before! I have enough fabric to make a second curtain and I hope to have that done this week.

Second, Jon and I took my cousin Joey for dim sum on Sunday. He loves asian foods of all kinds but had never had the deliciousness that is dim sum. He agreed with me that steamed pork buns are the best food ever and announced that he would like to have his next birthday party at the restaurant. Not sure what his parents will think of that, but I'm glad he enjoyed it. We next went to the asian grocery store where Joey got some chopsticks, frozen pork buns for later, and a fresh squid. He was much impressed that it was only $3.95 per pound and thought his dad might fry some up as a snack. I should mention that Joey is 10 years old. Anyway, we had a grand time. One's day can never be bad when dim sum is involved.

The rest of the weekend involved laying around, going to the dog park, watching the Oscars, cleaning spit-up off the couch/floor/sweatshirt/pants/dog/etc., and not doing dishes. We were really good at that last one. Jon helped organize an art show that opened this weekend and it went pretty well, although turn-out at the opening was lessened by the weird snowstorm that blew in Friday night. Evelyn spent the weekend being cute, not sleeping nearly enough during the day, waking frequently at night, screeching and giggling, and spitting up.

All-in-all it was a nice weekend, but, as always, it wasn't nearly long enough.
