Did you know airlines no longer offer reduced-price fares for infants? OK, so I only know for sure that Frontier and Delta don't offer them, at least not on domestic flights. We are flying to Utah in a few weeks and I thought I'd just look and see what the redued price fare would be. But since they don't have one, we'll be carrying Evelyn in our laps and all will be well. It's about an hour flight so I think we'll be OK. Evelyn isn't a HUGE fan of being held a lot, she is a wiggle worm to the 10th degree, but she'll be alright.
But in two months we are flying to Sacramento. The situation will be different for many reasons.
1. Evelyn will be older, more mobile, and even heavier.
2. We won't be renting a car so we will definitely need to bring our own carseat.
3. The flight is two and a half hours long.
We bought our tickets to carrie Evie as an infant-in-arms a while back, but after reading some horror stories about turbulance and children flying into ceilings and taking into account the reasons above, we decided to buy our daughter her own ticket. So I called Frontier to find out what kind of reduced fare we could get. I was almost 100% sure I saw something about this on their website, but I was told NO. So I hung up, not knowing what we wanted to do. I talked to Jon and we decided to call back and get her a full fare ticket. The person I talked to (after waiting 18 minutes, which was less than the 22 minutes I waited for the first call) said that it would cost an additional $25 to book over the phone. I might as well hang up, make an internet reservation with Evelyn as an adult, then call back and link the two reservations together. Fine. So I hang up, go on the intertubes, go through some back-and-forth that I won't get into, and went to buy the ticket. But in the time it took me to do all this, 10 minutes at the very most, the fare had gone up another $20. FOR THE LOVE. Fine. FINE. I will buy your STUPID full price fare at the higher price and just deal with it. Arrgh. Now our little baby's ticket is $70 more expensive than the tickets Jon and I bought for ourselves. Ridiculous.
I have to keep reminding myself it is for Evelyn's safety. Maybe it was an unnecessary thing to do, but it will give us peace of mind and make it easier to travel with her. I called back, waited 19 minutes, merged the two reservations, and I was done. EXCEPT, Frontier doesn't let you choose your seats until 24 hours before the flight, even if you are traveling with a child, so we just have to cross our fingers that we'll all be sitting together. Seriously.
Remember when airlines didn't actively discourage you from using their services? Those were the days.

We are flying to Ohio in July and Northwest charges $15 for the FIRST checked bag and $25 for the second. For a 10 day trip? Who needs less than 1 checked bag?!? I hate air travel. But we never got a full fare ticket for the kids until they turned 2 (when they need one). They did okay, no trouble except for trying to get Noah to suck on a sippy cup to pop his ears as we took off and landed (something to think about for Evie). Good luck and we can't wait to see you soon!
